Trust Horizon selects another 10 students for Annual Taster Course
 

TEN Eastern Bay secondary school students will have an opportunity to light a pathway into the electricity industry thanks to Trust Horizon. The annual electricity taster course is organised and co-funded by the Eastern Bay Energy Trust and Connexis (formerly the Electricity Supply Industry Training Organisation - ESITO) and based at Tarawera High School. Held during the first week of the term three school holidays, the week-long course is live-in, with the year 12 and year 13 students taking part in a variety of industry-related, team-building and personal development activities. Students aged 16 or over who live in the Eastern Bay region or Kaingaroa Village who have completed NCEA Level 1 with good literacy and numeracy skills are eligible to apply for the taster course. This year students selected attend Opotiki, Trident or Whakatane. Eastern Bay Energy Trust chairman Don Lewell said the course aimed to provide participants with an insight into the electricity supply industry with an emphasis on the many career opportunities available from line mechanics, cable jointers, electricians, electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, plant operators and many more. “We are selecting students who have an interest in science, technology and the electricity supply industry – and it can lead to apprenticeships or scholarships – so it’s an exciting opportunity for local youth.” “Students will learn how the New Zealand electricity industry works and will complete practical activities such as electrical or mechanical workshop projects like making a simple generator and making extension leads. Mr Lewell added the students will make site visits to a range of electricity supply companies including in Hamilton where they would spend some of the time. Students would also complete team buildings activities such as abseiling or rock climbing. The fourteenth annual electricity taster course starts on Thursday, September 27 and runs until Friday, October 5 when the students would give a presentation in groups to family and members of the industry about the course and their future pathways. One student would also be selected as the most outstanding trainee.
